AO 4/5/2022 The picturesque river village of Piermont has gone through an enormous transformation over the past 40 years. Director Woody Allen reportedly had to spruce it up to depict the look of a 1930’s depression town for his movie, “The Purple Rose of Cairo”. The former scruffy mill town is a mere memory these days, long gone after many years of gentrification, appealing more to a hip crowd of former Manhattanites. Nowadays you’ll find an abundance of upscale restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, and $1 million condos. Homes such as this 19th century Piermont original are hard to find. Especially with its many original features including a carved, curving main staircase, plus a second servant's back staircase. Three fireplaces, one with a superb carved mantle. Bay windows, high ceilings, and a quirky roofline will only appeal to the discerning few who appreciated its charm. Over the years it has benefitted from a large addition providing a spacious eat-in kitchen overlooking a wraparound deck and onto a secluded secret garden, brimming with interesting plantings and features. A lovely sunny corner for dining al fresco. There’s even a huge predator-proof chicken coop. Did someone say “freshly laid eggs?” A brief walk will take you into the village, and the mile-long pier out into the Hudson, or Tallman State Park, the Erie Rail Trail, and the village of Sparkill. An express bus that stops when you ask it to will whisk you into the city in less than 40 minutes. Or drive in half that time, Piermont is Exit 4 off the PIP.
